Name of the Scheme: Suspension Footbridge at Mawdpai, Suktia.
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 45.00 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA(BADP)2018-19.
On account of the topographic condition of the area, Suktia, Sohkhmie, and many other villages of the block are in dire need of connectivity like roads, bridges, footpaths, and footbridges, and it will take a couple of years in order to be able to saturate them all.
This suspension footbridge at Mawdpai (103 meters), lies in the deep gorge between Suktia and Sohkhmie village. Commutation between these two neighbouring villages takes place on daily basis and hence this footbridge was constructed in order to circumvent the distance between these two said villages.
The work started in the month of November 2019 and satisfactorily completed in the month of July 2020. This footbridge brings concrete benefit to the people of the area. It has shortened the 2.5 hours walking distance via the nearest route to a mere 1.5 hours. This footbridge not only serves in easing the commutation between these two villages (present population, Suktia=416, Sohkhmie=370) but also that of the other neighbouring villages like Tyrngei, Mawsiangei, Nongla, and also of the horticultural cultivators of the area in reaching their fields. This footbridge also serves as a connectivity for the people of Suktia, Tyrngei, Nongla, etc to reach Sohra market.
Name of the Scheme: Construction of Additional rooms at Press LP School Laitiam
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 7.8405 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA (BADP) 2018-19
Laitiam is a border village of Sohra block locating under 26-Shella AC. It has a present population of around 780 (August 2020) with around 135 households. The village has 2 (two) Lower Primary Schools, and Laitiam Pres. LP School is one which was established in the year 1941. It is a co-ed private aided school with a present roll strength of around 75 students. The school is accessible on foot only as the village is not yet connected up to its very interior by road as the river lying by the village stands as a barrier for road connectivity.
The school has really been serving the kids of the village all these couple decades, and the village cannot think of its present status without the service of this school. However, one of the problems that the school faced was the shortage of classrooms. Running the classes with only three small and congested existing rooms was not at all convenient for the sake of smooth and efficient impartation of education.
Due to its feasible location, the school building has also been designated as a Polling Station under 26-Shella AC. In order to help the School Managing Committee create more classrooms, the department granted a financial aid of INR 7.8405 (L) under BADP 2018-19 through the office of the BADO, Sohra. The building was duly and satisfactorily completed in all respects and is being used w.e.f the academic session 2020.
Name of the Scheme: Donbosco RCUP School Building at Dalia
Amount Sanctioned: Rs. 5.00 lacs
Years of Schemes: SCA(BADP)2018-19.
Dalia is a border village under Sohra block lying across Shella river and close to the International Border with Bangladesh. Its present population (2020) is around 1100.Since there was no upper primary school in the village, a Don Bosco Mission under the Laitkynsew Parish, out of the sense of responsibility for the future of the kids of the village, came forward and took the initiative, and set up this Upper Primary school in the year 1986 with a view to offer free and quality education to the village kids. Faced with poor financial position, they were not in a position to construct concrete building, so, classes were run in a kutcha house, and improvement was eventually made until the year 2017 when the storm blew its CGI roof away.
As the roof was beyond repair, the School Managing Committee approached the office of the Border Areas Development Officer, Sohra for financial assistance to enable them construct a new pucca building. The department accordingly sanctioned an amount of INR 5.00 lakh for the same under SCA(BADP) for the year 2018-19. The new building built just by the side of the old building was duly and satisfactorily completed in all respects, handed over to the SMC, and is being used in running the classes.
